millet avait initialement créé cette œuvre pour un américain , thomas gold appleton , qui n'a pas pris possession de la pièce . millet a ensuite changé la peinture pour inclure un clocher en arrière-plan et changer le nom de prayer for the potato crop en the angelus . La peinture a changé de mains plusieurs fois , se terminant par une guerre d'enchères entre la france et l'amérique . La peinture a également été source de spéculations , en raison de salvador Dali’s insistance pour que les personnages prient sur leur enfant décédé . Dali était si insistante que la peinture a finalement été x-rayed , révélant une forme qui ressemblait à un petit cercueil , indiquant que dali avait peut-être raison , et que millet a peut-être initialement créé la peinture avec le couple en deuil sur leur petit child’s cercueil .
